Comfort by Design:  Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Technology

This continuing education course offers an overview of the HVAC industry focusing on Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems. It details VRF technology and its advantages in both design and application for existing and new construction projects. In addition, it identifies the energy-efficiency and environmental benefits that VRF systems provide.

Learning objectives

Describe the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) industry
Identify and describe Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system technology
Explain the architectural and occupant design benefits of a VRF system solution
List the energy savings and environmental quality benefits provided by a VRF system solution Identify LEED credit categories achievable with VRF solutions

1 hour – 1 LU/HSW  Intermediate Level

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) First Cost Comparison

This continuing education course compares and contrasts four HVAC systems against VRF system costs.  Using a building scenario as the basis of the comparison, contractor costs for common installation components are compared.  In addition, the building costs for each HVAC system type are reviewed and compared against a VRF baseline.

Learning objectives

Identify and describe Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system technology
Use a building construction scenario to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of HVAC mechanical systems and VRF
Differentiate the initial equipment contractor cost for installing a HVAC mechanical system and a VRF system
Review the architectural, structural, electrical, and total building costs of five types of HVAC systems
