Position Title Design and Construction Project Manager

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Planning, Design and Construction, the Design and Construction Project Manager is responsible for the management of capital construction projects, including programming, design, construction management and contract administration for the successful execution of the University’s Capital Plan. The position requires a high degree of creativity, foresight, collaboration, and sound professional judgement in planning, organizing, programming, and guiding major and minor capital projects, programs and strategic initiatives to achieve the University’s capital project objectives. Position reports to the Director of Planning, Design and Construction.

This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under the Title IX federal regulations and “Mandatory Reporter” under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Misconduct Policy.

Description of Job Duties
  • Manages all phases of a capital project to include programming, schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding and negotiations, and construction/contract administration.
  • Collaborates with of architects, engineers, and other design professionals and vendors on drawings, specifications, and other documentations.
  • Collaborates with contractors to ensure adherence to the construction documents. Maintains frequent communication during the construction phase of the project to ensure prompt resolution of design and construction related issue.
  • Interacts with individuals and end-users to include, but not limited to, Deans, Faculty, Directors, and other Administrators.
  • Ensures project budget and schedule are maintained and tracked during the duration of the project.
  • Maintains project status reports for all assigned projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong budget and contract management skills with cost estimating and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgement in the establishment, interpretation, application, and enforcement of all regulations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, materials, and techniques of all building systems.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
  • Ability to achieve project objectives on multiple complex projects running simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management or related field.
Required Work Experience
Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in the management and design of construction projects, both highly complex and minor.
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of design and construction management experience in a Higher Education, Healthcare or Laboratory/Research environment.
Certification or licenses such as:
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM),
  • Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC),
  • Registered Architect (RA), in the State of Texas,
  • Professional Engineer (PE), in the State of Texas.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Project Management Professional (PMP).
Registered Architect (RA).
Professional Engineer (PE).
Work Hours
Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with extended hours as needed to meet department goals. Flexible work schedule upon approval by Director of Planning, Design and Construction.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to move about campus and within construction sites to review and inspect progress.
  • Ability to move around all areas of a construction site, to include bending, squatting, climbing, and flexibility to get to hard to reach places.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment during construction site visits.
