CRAN: Texas Voices – Michael Malone, FAIA

Texas Voices is a lecture series focused on the “soup to nuts” stories of one or two key residential undertakings critical to the development and identity of a practice. Unlike many design lectures that focus on a firm’s portfolio (highlight reel of beautiful images), these talks include construction shots (the ones you took in utter disbelief… how did this happen?) in addition to completed images. So much is learned over the course of each project – from the beginning of the design process to the completion of the punch list – and sharing stories about the process allows us all to be more prepared to navigate the often turbulent waters of residential practice.

This series was inspired by the TxA Conference series of architects talking about undertaking projects for themselves and their families. Lecturers described challenging and often comical situations (in retrospect) that occurred as a result of not producing complete documents, self-performing the work, taking the low bid, etc. – all the things we warn our clients not to do. While this series is focused on projects for clients, we hope you will similarly “pull back the curtain” on the process and openly discuss various surprises and difficulties that were encountered along with your associated responses and solutions.
