Peter Calthorpe
2011 Sustainable Urban Development Lecture by noted architect, urban planner, author and founder of the Congress for New Urbanism, Peter Calthorpe. This important event, planned for Friday, September 23, 2011 at Pearl Stable from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, will bring together architects, planners, developers, city leaders, and environmentalists for the purpose of reinforcing the virtues of dense urban growth and transit oriented development in San Antonio.
Our proposed format is a two-hour event beginning with a 45-minute talk by Peter followed by a 45-minute moderated panel discussion. Peter has agreed to participate in the panel as has Keith Parker, the CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit. Other invitations have been extended to Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, and Darryl Byrd, Managing Director of Pearl. We have invited Rick Casey, the host of Texas Week on KLRN TV, to be the moderator.
Peter Calthorpe’s presentation will focus on his research on the social, economic, and environmental impacts that development patterns have on cities. The panel discussion will explore the challenges and solutions for our region. The key points of focus relate directly to the vision of SA2020 and include:
*Downtown Development
*Economic Competitiveness
*Health and Fitness
*Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability
*Neighborhoods and Growth Management
*Transportation
